Minnesota [Not So] Nice
We’ve all done it as kids. You overslept your alarm for school and your shower time got pushed back, or maybe you were the last in line for the shower and had no choice but to rush through your morning routine...you run out to the car with wet hair in the middle of January and just like that - instantly frozen. Kind of cool to see when you’re a kid, but make no mistake, this could be one of the worst things you could do to your hair!
When your hair is wet, it’s in the most vulnerable state. For the same reason I tell my clients not to sleep in wet hair, when the water molecules in your hair strand expand due to colder temperatures, it can cause the hair to snap off (even at the root - yikes!). Leaving the house with wet hair can also expose your locks to environmental damage, worsening split ends, or sucking all of the moisture out of your hair, even if you use a hydrating conditioner or mask.
One of the biggest mistakes new hairdresser’s make is not drying a client’s hair completely during the styling process. Have you ever dried your hair and thought it was completely dry, but when the warm dryer turned off your hair felt a little cool? That’s a sure sign that your hair isn’t 100% dry.
I know what you’re thinking, and I totally get it - It’s kind of a catch 22. If you shower at night you shouldn’t sleep with wet hair, but if you shower in the morning, you must dry it before leaving the house. My shower time is after dinner or a workout, so I can allow for plenty of time for air drying with a leave in conditioner and heat protectant. I wait until it’s about 80% dry, then I activate the styling products (a mousse or root lifter) with heat from my blow dryer. When morning comes, all I have to do is run a flat iron through or add some loose waves.
Although the people might be Minnesota nice, Minnesota winters aren’t so friendly to your hair. Whether you’re a morning or night time wash kind of girl, just remember - wet hair and winter temperatures is a hair catastrophe waiting to happen. Maybe we should have listened to our parents more when they yelled at us for leaving the house with wet hair. After all, they were right!
