Clean Beauty with KW Wellness
I’m going to let you in on a little secret - I love learning about skin care just as much as I love learning about new hairstyling techniques. I believe that taking care of ourselves means taking care of the mind, body, and soul. We can’t just stop at hair, ladies - our skin is just as important as the health of our hair.
Throughout my time in the beauty industry, I’ve crossed paths with many estheticians and am so lucky to have found an amazing esthetician that I can go to for advice and product recommendations. Founder of KW Wellness, Kaila’s philosophy on health and skincare is simple: what you put in and on your body matters. This includes food, lotions, detergents, medications, and supplements. Today, I’m sharing her tips as an anti-acne expert on leading a holistic lifestyle when it comes to your skincare routine.
What is the most important skin care regimen you recommend to your clients?
“My biggest skin care and overall wellness recommendations stem from my passion of treating acne and looking at skincare with a whole body approach. If you're struggling with acne, don't just go right to an antibiotic or birth control. Antibiotics are known to harm your gut (which you need for healthy and clear skin) and birth control depletes your body of so many vital nutrients! Acne is also not a bacterial issue, which is why an antibiotic isn't the answer. When you have acne, your skin cells shed six times faster than your very blessed BFF who washes her face with shampoo and has never had a zit. 90% of people who have acne can achieve clear skin with the right products, paired with some diet and lifestyle changes. Your future self will thank you for going the holistic route.”
How does the food we eat play a factor in the health of our skin?
“Yes! I love taking a root cause approach. I always tell people what they put in their body is just as important as what they put on their body! I really try to promote low glycemic diets (meaning low sugar). High sugar intake is linked to accelerated aging, acne, and inflammatory skin issues, along with a host of health issues. Each meal you put together should have protein, fiber, and fat. One of my favorite accounts to follow for easy, attainable nutrition tips is @bewellbykelly.”
What do you think about Gua Sha?
“I love gua sha stones! Gua sha is known as eastern botox. The majority of lymph in your body is in your face (this is what is responsible for detoxification) and it can become stagnant, which leads to dry, dull, lifeless looking skin. Gua sha helps keep lymph moving and is known for decreasing puffiness, fine lines, and inflammation. Most of us don't take nearly enough time for self care, especially in 2020. Find ten minutes at night to take some time for yourself and treat your skin to an at home facial with a gua sha stone. My favorite oil to use with gua sha stones is rosehip oil from Solaris Laboratories (they have great gua sha stones as well). Primally Pure also has some great stones!”
What are the most popular skin care trends right now?
“I would say the biggest trend I'm hearing from clients right now is that everyone wants "clean beauty.” I'm always a little leery of this because so many clean beauty brands are filled with pore clogging ingredients like coconut oil (which should NEVER go on your skin by the way) and shea butter. If clean beauty is something that's important to you, research a company's values, ask how their products are sourced, and look at the ingredients in the products.”
